Owens Corning is one of the big three shingle manufacturers in North America (GAF and CertainTeed being the others). Their Duration® line is widely installed across Colorado, and the warranty terms are worth understanding before you sign a contract.
The 3 Owens Corning warranty levels
Level 1: Standard Limited Warranty (automatic)
Ships with every Owens Corning shingle. Covers:
- Manufacturing defects: Lifetime (limited)
- Material coverage: Pro-rated after the first 10 years
- Workmanship: Not covered — that’s your contractor’s responsibility
- Wind: Up to 110 mph (with standard installation)
- Algae resistance (StreakGuard® line): 10 years
Same catch as other manufacturers: Pro-rated coverage after year 10 means you’re getting diminishing value every year. Non-prorated materials coverage is what you actually want.
Level 2: Preferred Contractor Warranty
Installed by an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor. Improvements:
- Longer non-prorated materials coverage
- Enhanced algae and wind protection
Level 3: Platinum Protection Roofing System Limited Warranty
Only available through Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractors (top tier). Includes:
- 50-year non-prorated materials coverage
- 25-year workmanship coverage (including labor)
- Full roofing system coverage — all the components (underlayment, ice barrier, starter, hip & ridge) must be Owens Corning for coverage
What voids coverage
- Mixing brands: All system components must be Owens Corning for the Platinum Protection warranty. Mixing underlayment or ice barrier from another brand voids the system coverage.
- Inadequate ventilation: Same as GAF and CertainTeed — poor ventilation cooks shingles and voids warranty.
- Installation errors: Only Preferred and Platinum Preferred contractors get the enhanced warranties because Owens Corning trusts their installation practices.
- Failure to register: Enhanced warranties typically require project registration within 30-60 days of completion.
- Work by another contractor after installation: Later repairs by a non-OC contractor can void coverage.
What to ask your contractor
- “Are you an Owens Corning Preferred or Platinum Preferred contractor?”
- “Will you use all Owens Corning system components?”
- “Will you register my Platinum Protection warranty with Owens Corning?”
- “What’s your workmanship warranty?” (Platinum Preferred includes 25-year labor coverage. Everyone else, you’re relying on the contractor’s own warranty.)
Western Edge Exteriors
We’re working toward Owens Corning Preferred Contractor status. Until then, we can still install Duration and other Owens Corning shingles with the standard limited warranty. For Platinum Protection coverage, we recommend checking back with us once certification is complete, or asking if we can partner with a Platinum Preferred shop for your specific project.
Our own workmanship warranty is 10 years on labor regardless of shingle brand.
